Most Halloween emails look alike. There's a pumpkin, a pun and "spooky savings inside". Good Halloween email design is simpler than that. Pick one idea, keep your brand easy to recognise, add a single seasonal colour, and write the offer and the date in live text so the email still makes sense with images off. Then check dark mode and classic Outlook before you export. Milo Email Studio gets you there quickly: start from the Halloween sale starter or your own blocks on the drag-and-drop canvas, with the AI designer on hand for a first draft, and leave with export-ready HTML or MJML or a Zoho Campaigns draft. Start with one idea, not six decorations
Before you open a layout, decide what the email is about. One product, one offer, one event or one story.
Then let Halloween do one job. It can be the hero image, the headline joke or the colour. It doesn't need to be all of them.
Say you run a candle shop. Your Halloween email could be called "Lights out": one dark hero section, one candle, a line of copy and a button that says "Shop the autumn range". No cobwebs in the corners and no bats in the footer. It still feels seasonal, and nobody has to squint at the logo to work out who sent it.
If you want a second section, give it a different job. "Last orders for delivery by 31 October" earns its place. A row of six spooky products probably doesn't.
Halloween colours without losing your brand
Keep the things people know you by: your fonts, your button shape and your logo. Then add one accent colour. Deep orange, plum, near-black or acid green all work well on one or two sections, or on this email's buttons.
In Milo, that's a change to a single block, such as the hero section's background or this email's button colour. Everything else keeps following your brand kit.
Leave your main brand kit alone. Changing a kit doesn't restyle emails you've already made, so it won't help older canvases, and you'd only have to change it back next week. On Pro or Team you can have more than one kit, so a separate seasonal kit picked for this email is another option. Free comes with one kit, so stick to block changes there. There's more on how kits behave in brand kits for on-brand email templates.
Subject line and preview line: say what's inside
"Spooky savings inside" could sit on anyone's email. Name the offer and say when it ends. Then let the preview line finish the thought rather than repeat it.
A few pairs to adapt. We made these up for this read, so treat them as starting points, not tested winners:
- Subject: 20% off autumn candles until 31 October. Preview: The dark ones always go first.
- Subject: Late opening on 31 October, 6pm to 10pm. Preview: Hot cider, pumpkin loaf and a prize for the best costume.
- Subject: Three soups for a cold, dark night. Preview: Plus the pumpkin one you keep asking about.
- Subject: The haunted house kit is back. Preview: 15% off until midnight on 31 October.
You can ask the AI designer to set the subject and preview line for you, or write them yourself. The subject lives in the email's settings and the preview text sits with the canvas. The HTML email checklist has more on how the two lines work together.
One strong image, and an email that works without it
One good hero image or illustration does more than five small ones. Give it alt text that says what it's doing, like "Black candle on a dark table, 20% off until 31 October", rather than "halloween-banner-final.png".
Put the offer, the date and the button in live text, not baked into the artwork. If images are off, or an inbox shows a summary instead of your design, people still get the point.
The AI designer places images you upload or pick from your media library. It doesn't make them. So have your artwork ready, or drop in a placeholder and swap it before you send the Test. The checklist's section on images being off goes into more detail.
Dark palettes and dark mode
Halloween palettes lean dark, and dark mode can trip them up. Two things catch people out most:
- A black logo on a transparent PNG can vanish on a dark background. Give it a solid background of its own.
- Orange text on black can lose contrast when an email client rewrites your colours.
The fix is boring but it works. Open the Test in a dark-mode inbox you own and look at it properly before you export. The checklist covers dark mode checks if you want the full list.
Animated GIFs: make the first frame do the work
Classic Outlook on Windows usually shows only the first frame of a GIF. Put the offer or the key image in frame one, and treat the animation as a bonus for everyone else. You can upload a GIF to Milo like any other image.
Keep the file light, too. A heavy seasonal email is more likely to get clipped in Gmail. There's more on Outlook in Outlook email fallbacks, and if you're tempted by video, native video fallbacks explains why a GIF is often the safer choice.
Build it in Milo in an afternoon
Milo now has a Halloween sale starter: a sale hero, a featured product, two product cards and a discount-code banner, ready for your brand kit to re-skin. Prefer something quieter? The Promo, Event or Newsletter starters work too.
Then describe the email to the AI designer the way you'd explain it to a colleague. For example: "A Halloween email for our candle shop. One offer: 20% off the autumn range until 31 October. Dark plum background behind the hero only, and keep our fonts and buttons. One button: Shop the autumn range. Set a subject and preview line that name the offer."
What comes back is on-brand blocks you can edit, so rewriting a generic line, swapping in your image and writing its alt text are quick jobs. The brand kit stays as it is, and only the accent you picked changes.
Before it goes anywhere, someone can sign it off from a preview link, and a Test in your own inbox shows it with images off, in dark mode, on your phone, and in classic Outlook if your list uses it. Then take export-ready HTML or MJML into your ESP (here's how to import the file), or connect Zoho Campaigns and push a draft.
If you haven't used it before, the AI email designer read walks through describing an email and editing what comes back.
After Halloween
Switch the accent off and carry on with your normal kit. The same habit of one idea, one accent and the offer in live text works just as well for your Black Friday emails.
Questions
How do I design a Halloween email that stands out?
Commit to one idea: one image, one offer and one button. Add a single seasonal accent to your normal brand, and write the offer and date in live text so the email works with images off.
How do I add Halloween colours without breaking my brand?
Keep your fonts, buttons and logo. Change one thing, such as one section's background or this email's button colour. Don't edit your main brand kit for a one-off seasonal email.
What should a Halloween subject line say?
What's inside and how long it lasts. A clear offer and date usually beats a pun that could sit on any brand's email. Use the preview line to finish the thought.
Do dark Halloween designs break in dark mode?
They can. Email clients rewrite colours in different ways, and black logos on transparent backgrounds can disappear. Put the logo on a solid background and check the email in a dark-mode inbox before you export.
Will an animated GIF work in Outlook?
Classic Outlook on Windows usually shows only the first frame. Put the offer or key image in that frame so the email still makes sense if the animation never plays.
Is there a Halloween email template in Milo?
Yes. Pick the Halloween sale starter, then describe your version to the AI designer. Your brand kit keeps it on brand, and you export HTML or MJML for your ESP, or push a draft to Zoho Campaigns.
Can Milo's AI designer make the Halloween images?
No. It drafts on-brand blocks and can set the subject, preview line and alt text, but it doesn't create images. Upload your own or use a placeholder.
When should I send a Halloween email?
Before 31 October, with enough time for anything that has to arrive by then, like a delivery or an RSVP. There's no single best day. Go with what suits your offer and your list.
How do I get the finished email into my ESP?
Take export-ready HTML or MJML and import it, or connect Zoho Campaigns and push a draft. You then choose the list and the send time in your ESP, as you would for any other campaign.
