Standalone email builders let you design outside your ESP and leave with HTML (sometimes MJML, or a one-click push into your ESP account), while Mailchimp or whoever you use still looks after the list and the send. The big suites (Stripo, Beefree / RGE Studio) win on the number of templates and connectors. Lighter tools, Milo Email Studio included, suit you if a drag-and-drop canvas with a brand kit, an AI designer for first drafts and a clean export are all you need. This is a shortlist grouped by type of tool.
If you're looking for a Stripo alternative or a Beefree alternative, you probably want an email template builder that exports HTML for the ESP you already use. It's the same choice as a standalone email designer versus Mailchimp's built-in editor: design outside the ESP, send from inside it.
Standalone designer vs ESP-locked editor
An ESP (email service provider) holds your list, segments, automations and the send button. ESP editors like Mailchimp's sit right next to all that, so your designs stay tied to that platform.
A standalone email builder (or email studio) is where you design and check the email. You export a file, or push a template into the ESP you already pay for, and the campaign goes out from there.
For the practical side of handing over the file, see how to design a branded email and export HTML or MJML to your ESP. For Zoho Campaigns draft push, see design and push a Zoho Campaigns draft. And for when designing outside the ESP is worth it, see design then export vs build in your ESP.
What "export to your ESP" actually means
File export (HTML, ZIP, sometimes MJML)
You download or copy the HTML, then import it through the ESP's custom HTML or "code your own" option. Some tools give you a zip with the images included. MJML is markup that compiles to responsive email HTML, and it's worth exporting if your team keeps that source under version control. Most ESPs still want compiled HTML when you import.
One-click or native ESP push
You connect your ESP account and push the template straight in. Stripo, RGE Studio, Mail Studio, Postcards, Tabular and others all offer some version of this. The design tool still doesn't hold your list, though, and pushing a template isn't the same as sending the campaign.
Comparison at a glance
Just the facts, with no scores, stars or made-up rankings. Template library sizes are rough, and plan limits (exports per month, seats) are on each vendor's pricing page.

Stripo: when the mega-builder wins
Stripo is a full production suite: drag-and-drop plus HTML and CSS editing, AMP blocks, modules, brand palettes, co-editing, AI helpers, and export as HTML or straight to a long list of ESPs (feature showcase, integrations). Its template gallery claims 1,650+ HTML templates (templates).
Pick Stripo if you want a huge template gallery, AMP modules, lots of control in the editor, and direct push or export to many ESPs.
Skip Stripo if that's more than you need for a few branded campaigns a month, and a lighter studio would get the job done faster.
Beefree / RGE Studio: collaborative suite and SDK lineage
Beefree offers RGE Studio for teams and the SDK for embedding, and says it has 1,600+ ready-made templates. RGE Studio leads on AI Co-Pilot, brand styles, feedback and approvals, connectors, and HTML export or copy-paste (export help, integrations). It's built around HTML rather than MJML.
Pick Beefree / RGE Studio if you want polished team collaboration, a big template catalogue and connectors into your ESPs.
Skip it if you mainly want an AI designer, a brand kit and HTML and MJML export, without everything else a full suite brings.
Mail Studio, Chamaileon, Parcel: other real shapes
Mail Studio (desktop visual + code)
Mail Studio is a desktop app (Windows, macOS and Linux) with visual and code editing. It exports standard HTML for importing into your ESP, and can upload when you save to providers such as Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor and SendGrid (features). When we checked, Figma import was still listed as planned, so don't count on it yet. MJML export: unknown.
Best for: people who want a desktop editor for email HTML that works offline.
Chamaileon (collaborative email CMS)
Chamaileon focuses on modular blocks, a design system, user roles and clean HTML. It describes itself as the production layer between your ideas and your sending platform, and its homepage lists ESP and CRM integrations. Check its docs for the exact export formats and MJML support before you commit. Its comparison page is written by Chamaileon, so read it as their own description rather than a neutral ranking.
Best for: teams that want CMS-style modular production and permissions.
Parcel (code-first)
Parcel is a platform for coding email: HTML, text and AMP in one file, components, transformers (inline CSS, minify), test sends, team workspaces and public share links. A full export is a zip of the processed HTML, AMP and text. It isn't a drag-and-drop builder with a big template gallery for marketers. MJML export: unknown.
Best for: developers and agencies who write email HTML and want a coding workflow rather than a template gallery.
Nearby options
- Postcards (Designmodo): AI prompt-to-template, brand presets, HTML and one-click ESP export, collaboration and preview links.
- Tabular: a drag-and-drop HTML builder that says it uploads directly to 20+ ESPs, including Mailchimp, plus inbox previews.
Some of the "builders" you'll come across are actually embeddable SDKs (Beefree SDK, Unlayer and similar) living inside another app. They're the engine under someone else's product, not standalone studios like the ones above.
Where Milo fits
Milo is a lighter email studio for getting on-brand emails out of the door without a full suite. The AI designer drafts on-brand blocks on a canvas from a plain description, a test goes to an address on your account (the subject starts with "Test"), and you leave with HTML or MJML. Brand kits keep your palette, fonts and buttons consistent, and preview links let people see a read-only proof. On Team, you can work on the same canvas together. Starters cover Welcome, Promo, Newsletter, Event and blank.
For most ESPs, you download an export-ready file and import it. Zoho Campaigns works differently: an org admin connects it with OAuth, then you can push a finished email over as an export-ready draft campaign (with a list or segment, plus a topic if shown) and send it from Zoho. See design and push a Zoho Campaigns draft.
Choose Milo if you've got a brand, a clear idea of the email you want, and an ESP you already trust to send it. You get on-brand blocks from a starter or the AI designer, a proof you can check, and a clean handoff: a file to import into your ESP or HubSpot import, or a Zoho Campaigns draft if you've connected it.
Choose something else if you need a marketplace of 1,000+ templates, AMP carousels, direct push to 90 ESPs, a desktop code editor or a full collaborative CMS. That's Stripo, RGE Studio, Parcel, Chamaileon or something like them.
How to choose
Export format
Do you just need HTML, or MJML as well for version control? Most ESPs import HTML, but MJML export matters if your team keeps it in git or compiles it in a pipeline.
Brand controls
Styling each email by hand, or a brand kit that new blocks inherit.
Proof and collab
A read-only preview link might be all you need. Approvals, roles and co-editing matter more for bigger teams.
AI assist
An AI designer that drafts blocks is different from a suite that generates whole sequences or templates from a prompt. Match the tool to the job.
ESP handoff
Importing a file (paste, HTML or zip) or pushing through a connector. Either way, check the unsubscribe and merge tags in the ESP before you send.
Template appetite
A big template gallery, a handful of starters, or code from scratch.
Scope
A studio that just does design, or a suite that also does landing pages, AMP, gamification and SDK embeds. Only pay for what you'll actually use.
Questions
Is a standalone email builder the same as an ESP?
No. The builder is where you design and export (or push a template). The ESP holds the list and sends the campaign.
Will I lose my ESP automations?
No. You import or push templates, and your automations, segments and sends stay in the ESP.
Do I need Stripo if I only send a few branded campaigns a month?
Often not. A big gallery and 90 ESP connectors are great for teams producing lots of email. A lighter studio can be plenty if a brand kit and the AI designer cover what you need.
Where does the campaign go after export?
Your Test goes to an address on your account. After you export (or push a Zoho draft), you send the campaign from your ESP.
Is Beefree the same as RGE Studio?
They're the same product family. RGE Studio is the current name for the team product (it used to be the Beefree app), and Beefree SDK is the builder other apps embed.
Which tools export MJML?
Milo exports MJML as well as HTML. Stripo can import MJML into its editor, but we couldn't confirm a straightforward MJML download when we checked. Beefree / RGE Studio is built around HTML. For the others in the table, assume MJML is unknown unless their docs say otherwise.
